Last but not least: Since so many have asked about my German traditions, here are some interesting fun facts:

New Year's:

Name: Silvester after Pope Sylvester who was pope from 314 to 335 AD.

Did you know? New Year's was originally not celebrated on Jan 1st, but on March 25 which is annunciaton day.  Not until 1582 was New Year's celebrated on the 1st of Jan in parts of Europe but in some protestant parts of Germany it was not adapted until the 1700s, in Britain 1751 and Russia waited until 1918.  Pretty cool!

Most loved custom: Lead pouring.  You melt lead in a spoon (usually over a candle, but my husband is too impatient and uses a blow torch :). Once melted, drop the liquid metal in water, all present interpret what shape it is.  Each shape has a fortune attached which becomes the fortune for the new year.

We do this every year, at our New Year's party.  Always a huge hit, especially with our pyromaniac friends!

Craziest superstition: Don't have any wet laundry around the house or else someone dear will pass away the next year.  As hard as I try to ignore this, years of indoctrination assure that my laundry is always dry on New Year's.  What can I say?

Why all the loud noise (think noise makers, firecrackers, etc.)? To chase out evil spirits.  Are there any left after all the racket of all these years?

So here is a great recipe for just our skinny purposes: Take some mixed greens, grill some chicken, throw in a few extra veggies, chop up some tomatoes, (if you want to cheat, roasted almonds are great) and then spritz, spritz.  This Salad Spritzer, tastes great, not like your usual low cal dressings AND it has only 2 calories per serving.  What a great thing!  Diet saved!  Enjoy!

Happy Fall Everyone!

1. This week's sale is fantastic, don't miss it. We are selling this gigantic 30" Red French Vintage Gallery Clock for $35.00, while supplies last. It retails for $120.00Wow You are saving a wopping 71%!!! This is way less than wholesale, way, way less than retail and all around a great deal. Snatch yours while you can!

2. Pumpkin Month has arrived. When I first moved to the US, I could not believe that all this great pumpkin stuff gets thrown away. So I went on a search for great recipes and have been a fan of pumpkin ever since. Here is one of my favorite ones! Pumpkin-Chocolate-Chip Bread. I made some tonight and it was gone within minutes. You've gotta try it, it is just like the Great Harvest bread. SOOOOOOOO good!

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread

2 1/2 c. white flour
1 c. whole wheat flour
3 c. sugar
2 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
16 oz. cooked or canned pumpkin puree (not pie filling)
1 c. oil
4 eggs, beaten lightly
2/3 c. water
1 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 2 (9x5 inch) loaf pans, or 3 (8x4 inch) loaf pans, (I used about 6 2x4'ish loaf pans (only bake these for 30 minutes) + 1 8x4). Mix flours, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together in a bowl; set aside. Mix pumpkin, eggs, water, oil, and 2/3 c. water and stir into dry ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Place batter in prepaired pans. Bake 60-70 minutes (only 30 for the small ones) until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Note: I did not use wheat flower, only white, it turned out great! Kids and neighbors are begging for more!

3. We will be at the Battlecreek Boutique at the old Pleasant Grove req center. This is a great show with lots of fun vendors and of course those awesome buns! We will have two booth, one with home decor and one with wonderful yet super well priced jewelry, charms and girly stuff. Great coats, cell phone charms, you know a little bit of bling. All brand new, never before seen merchandise. Come and check it out.

This is such a fun fall activity for the entire family; the leaves are just gorgeous this time of year! Don't miss it, it is over in a snap!

Two Shows This Weekend!

We continue our busy show schedule. Check us out this week at Oh Sweet Sadie and Sweet Tweets! Both places have fun, fun vendors and a special flair. Come and join us!

April Fools!

Today was fun. I love April Fool's Day. Small holiday, big laughs :) Except the laughs were on us. Little Mister taped the sprayer on the sink, so when I made him his after school snack, I showered the kitchen and myself instead. We got Little Mister back though, but our joke on the girls flopped. We felt rather deflated. We had put Easter egg dye in their faucets. When we tried it, it worked like a charm and we only saw pink. BUT when we sent them to brush their teeth, nothing except regular plain old water came out. Oh well, you can't win them all.

What did we do for Little Mister?

We made "Spaghetti." When he asked what we were having for dinner, he was not excited. We just had it last night and he is a meat and potato kind a guy. Anyhow, when I presented him with the Spaghetti, he was even less impressed. I had put "Parmesan cheese" on top, which he hates. He did not want to eat at first, but he is such a good little guy, after asking him nicely he decided to eat w/o a fuss. Only it wasn't Spaghetti. We had put vanilla ice cream through a pasta machine, put pureed strawberries on top and sprinkled it with white chocolate shavings. Of course, once he tasted it, he thought it was totally great. The girls enjoyed the treat but did not fall for it (we got them on this a few years ago). Right after he was done with his treat, he asked rather cautiously, "are we still having spaghetti for dinner." He was delighted that I had made a roast with cheesy rice and broccoli. Perfect day for him!

Right after publishing this, Medium Miss asked me to take her to bed. When I entered her room I was doused with water courtesy of a delicately placed cup on top of her door. I had to laugh so hard, I cried. I really didn't expect it. It made her happy, which made me even happier. Soon after, on a urgent trip to..., I ran into the bathroom doorway that was taped shut with cellophane, craftily placed by Big Miss. All of us were laying on the floor laughing. I love days like these...
